GODZILLA 2: STRANGER THINGS Breakout Millie Bobby Brown Joins The Monster Sequel!

Last year saw the release of Stranger Things on Netflix. The show was a love letter to ‘80s pop culture, and was something of a Stephen King/Steven Spielberg hybrid. Though as great as the series was, it’s also a show that could very well have faltered from one key factor: its casting. The show has four pre-teens leading it, along with a few high schoolers. Given the depth of the material, it’s something that could have been hard to watch had the kids done a horrible job.

Luckily for us fans, the kids were not just serviceable in their roles; they were amazing. While everyone in the cast did a stellar job (they did just win a SAG award for Best TV Drama Ensemble, after all), one of the big standout performances came from Millie Bobby Brown, who played the character Eleven.

As reported by THR last Friday, it looks like the young actress is taking advantage of this first big success and using it to lock down her first film role in none other than Godzilla: King of Monsters, the sequel to the 2014 Godzilla film, which was directed by Gareth Edwards. There is no word on how big the role will be.

While there has been very little in terms of information for King of Monsters, we do know that Krampus director Michael Dougherty is on board to helm the project, and that he co-wrote the script with previous co-writer Zach Shields. That pairing doesn’t necessarily have us incredibly excited to see what the movie has in store, but given Brown’s casting, perhaps it’s an indication that the actress and her agent saw something worth putting to screen in the script. Of course, it could also just be a way to catapult her name even higher, but only time will tell.

Godzilla: King of Monsters is the latest in many upcoming monster movies on the horizon. Given the technology filmmakers have at their fingertips, it was almost a given that we’d see a resurgence of kaiju movies. Yes, they were made popular decades ago with the most bare of visual effects, and yes we tried to bring Godzilla back in the late-1990s, but with the proliferation of affordable CG and (most importantly) a general need for most blockbusters not to be garbage, now is as perfect time as any.

2014 saw the release of Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, which did a great job of giving the the Japanese monster some gravitas, even if it stumbled on a human level. This year, we’ll be seeing Kong: Skull Island, which will introduce audiences to the biggest King Kong we’ve ever seen — one that stand toe-to-toe with Godzilla. Finally, 2019 will see the release of Godzilla: King of Monsters, which will bring everyone’s favorite nuclear mutation into the spotlight.

Let’s just hope the human element in this one is worth watching.
