If you were sitting there and scratching your head at the most recent Golden Globes ceremony when you saw Ridley Scott’s THE MARTIAN pop up under the “comedy or musical†category, you weren’t the only one. Most everyone who saw the film was scratching their heads. Sure, THE MARTIAN had plenty of moments of levity in it, but on the whole, it was unquestionably a drama about human survival and ingenuity.
That wasn’t the first time the Golden Globes have mis-categorized one of their nominees. Films like CHOCOLAT, ALMOST FAMOUS, and DRIVING MISS DAISY, dramas in every sense of the word, were also victims of the same egregious mischaracterization. Given how long the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has been around (over 70 years), one would think they would’ve come up with a system to keep light-hearted dramas from being mis-labeled at the Golden Globes.
It’s 2016, and according to EW, they finally seem to be taking measures. The rule change? It’s so straight-forward, it’s almost ridiculous. Here’s the change, according to the outlet:
“Dramas with comedic overtones should be entered as dramas.â€
While this is undoubtedly good news, it also seems to be quite the blow to common sense. Not to get too editorial on this piece of news, but based on how small of a change this ruling is, it seems clear that the HFPA had the power to keep THE MARTIAN out of the category to begin with. All they needed to do was shift their mindset a bit.
What’s the biggest Golden Globes mis-categorization you remember? Do you think this rule specification will prevent similar problems in the future?
