Greg Berlanti’s BLACK LIGHTNING TV Series Gets Pilot Order From Fox

In the world of DC comic adaptations, Greg Berlanti is the guy who seems to be doing it best. Thanks to him, we not only have shows like Arrow, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl, but thanks to him, they all exist within the same DC universe. In the eyes of many fans, it’s a universe that currently trumps the DC Extended Universe on film, which currently consists of such films as Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad.

Recently, we reported that Berlanti was hard at work pitching another DC comic book TV adaptation to networks, namely the African American character Black Lightning. Given the executive producer’s connection with all those other CW DC shows, it seemed like the CW may be a good fit for Black Lightning. Well, those hoping for that to be the case have no such luck.

According to TheWrap, Fox has committed to produce a pilot for the DC show.

The synopsis for the show is described by the outlet as follows:

“Black Lightning’s everyday alter ego is Jefferson Pierce, who made his choice: he hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter hellbent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning.”

So what does this mean regarding potential connections to the DC Arrow-verse over on the CW? Sadly, it doesn’t look too good. While yes, Supergirl was a show that initially aired on CBS, and while it aired on that network, it managed to have a crossover with The Flash. The main difference between Supergirl and Black Lightning, however, is that both CBS and the CW are both at least partially-owned by CBS Corporation, while Fox is owned by Fox Entertainment Group, a completely different entity. As such, crossovers seem to be highly unlikely.

That being said, you never know what companies are willing to do nowadays. For the longest time, it seemed impossible that Spider-Man would ever join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and look what happened with that. In short, never say never, but I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting around for Black Lightning to cross over with the rest of the Arrow-verse. But who knows? Perhaps in allowing the show to stand on its own, it will allow Berlanti to create something that feels dramatically different from the other series he’s offering.
