GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2: Dave Bautista On Drax And His Expanded Role In Sequel

Dave Bautista is an actor who’s done a great job at curating the roles he’s taken on. Going into the business from his previous life as a professional wrestler, Bautista was careful about taking on jobs that exposed his weakness, all the while learning what he could from those around him. His humility and self-awareness has definitely gone a long way to make him one of the more likable talents in Hollywood, and as such, seeing his rise into more prominent roles has been a rewarding thing to see.

In addition to his role in Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049, this year will see him return as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Speaking with Collider, he reflected on the effect 2017 can have on his overall career.

“I’m curious to see how much will change this year, because my role in Guardians is so much bigger. But also because I think Blade Runner is going to be a huge film, and it will probably win a lot of awards.”

No joke about the awards potential for Blade Runner 2049. While some can dismiss it as another typical science fiction film, Villeneuve has set himself on the road to accolades. From Prisoners to Sicario and Arrival, one can hope that Blade Runner 2049 will be the culmination of all his skills, and it’s something that Bautista himself can benefit from. But before that film hits theaters, we can’t forget about his part as Drax. For those who appreciated the character in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, get ready to experience a lot more.

“It’s an extended version of the first film, for the Drax character. There’s just a lot more … most people’s first perception of Drax would be he’s just a big, muscly brute, and he’s just going to go in and be an all-action character. But he’s more funny, driven … there’s a lot more of that. He gets closer and more caring with the other Guardians, and they become more of a solid family in this one. If I had to put a tag on this second film I would say ‘family,’ that’s kind of the theme.”

The formation of family was definitely a theme the first film ran with, and as effective as it was, the development of that idea into a second film has the potential to take things to the a real tearjerking level. Let’s hope that Drax’s journey will add to that main theme.
