Guardians of The Galaxy 2: Director James Gunn Writes A Heartfelt Letter To Fans

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the sequel to 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, becoming a box-office smash over the weekend, director James Gunn took the time to reach out through social media and pen a heartfelt letter to fans. In an age where all of today’s biggest movies are all cogs in bigger franchises, it’s always wonderful to hear the actual love, care, and personality. Plenty of filmmakers have managed to share their thoughts during the production of their films, and Gunn is one of those who is best at connecting with fans.

Gunn began by talking about the movies successful opening, and how he had spent most every waking hour over the last two years working on the second installment of the franchise. The letter quickly became far more personal, as he explained never having felt like he had a place, that he didn’t really fit in.

“I never felt like I belonged, had an incredibly difficult time connecting to other people and, despite having love around me, I had an impossible time experiencing it, or taking it in.”

Gunn goes on to describe that as a young man he found refuge in Marvel Comics, along with science fiction and horror films. It was through these comic books, films, and heavy diet of rock music, that Gunn came to see the world outside of the one he felt trapped in, and most of all that there were other people in his same situation.

“I experienced something deeper – the realization that I wasn’t completely alone.”

Gunn now uses filmmaking as a way to connect with people, something that had proved to be difficult for him in the past. He hopes that anyone else that may be troubled can find solace in the films he makes, and use them to help themselves in ta similar fashion.

Gunn points specifically to the Guardians as examples.

“They’re a group of heartbroken misfits whose lives have been bereft of tenderness and connection and who have a nearly impossible time trusting themselves or others.”

Gunn emphasized that we are all one, “They are me. They are you. We are Groot.”

He then thanked the fans for their support over the last two years while making Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and expressed his love for them and pledged to stay by the fans sides over the next three years as work on the next Guardians sequel beings.

What do you think of Gunn’s statements, and what did you think of the overall message that the Guardians of the Galaxy films have shown thus far? Let us know in the comments down below!
