In the industry of inside scoops, not every scoop can be a rumor. Some are revealed so early on in the process that by the time the film goes into production, the forecasted story point is no longer valid. Some are misunderstood. And some are just plain wrong.
Earlier today, Schmoes Know posted a scoop that the Elders, the most powerful beings in the universe, would be in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. While this wouldn’t have been a completely out-of-left-field move from the film — it is a franchise that loves to take things to an intergalactic level, after all — it would definitely seem to overcrowd an already crowded cast and plot. The rumor went on to state that the Elders of the Universe would be comprised of The Collector, Ayesha, Sylvester Stallone’s character, and Sharon Stone’s character.
Well, it was a fun rumor while it lasted, but director James Gunn was all too quick to shoot down the rumor as false.
Of course, even if the rumor had been true, we could hardly have expected Gunn to admit it. Half the fun for a filmmaker is witnessing reactions to the events in the film firsthand, after all. However, there have been plenty of other rumors circulating the web for quite some time, and Gunn has done a solid job of staying out of the conversation.
Since he took to Twitter to deny this one, I feel like we could take it to the bank that the Elders will not be in the film. If that’s not enough evidence, there was one aspect of that rumor that seemed a bit fishy to me, and that came in the form of The Collector. Earlier this year, both Gunn and Benicio del Toro (who plays the Collector) confirmed that the Collector would not be in the sequel. The rumor stated that the Collector would be one of the Elders in the film, and that is a direct contradiction.
This makes me believe the earlier reports were correct and that the scoop was, indeed, false.
