HAN SOLO: Woody Harrelson Talks About His Role As Han’s Mentor

If there’s one film that’s got me nervous in the Star Wars universe, it’s definitely the upcoming standalone Han Solo flick. In short, this is a movie that really doesn’t need to happen. We all have nice, warm, fuzzy memories of Han Solo in his prime during Star Wars: A New Hope. We got to see his evolution as a character all the way through the recently-released Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Since we’ve seen this character grow on screen over the past several decades, there is really very few reasons why we’d want to see him young…or played by anyone else other than Harrison Ford.

But, let’s be real. No one’s asking my opinion, and no matter what I say, or how resistant I am to the idea, the movie’s getting made. Given that I have no control over that, we can only hope that they make all the right decisions to ensure that it’s actually a good movie. Between directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, writer Lawrence Kasdan, and the cast that includes Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, and Emilia Clarke, I’d say they’re well on their way to making something that can stand alongside the other films. More recently, another actor that was confirmed was that of Woody Harrelson.

Given Harrelson’s track record in film, it seemedsafe to assume that he’d be something of a scoundrel mentor to Han, and based on a recent interview, it sounds like our speculation was correct. Speaking with Mashable, the actor gave us a few details on what to expect.

“I’m a mentor to Han, but I’m also a bit of a criminal. I don’t think I’ll have a lot of make-up or anything. We’ll see how that look develops. I’m meeting with those guys tomorrow, the hair and make-up and stunts and everything. We’ll just have a little discussion about that.”

As much as I don’t care to see a Han Solo movie, casting Harrelson in this kind of role definitely seems to be a step in the right direction. Now as to whether or not he’ll be a normal human or some kind of alien figure…that’ll be interesting to see. Star Wars obviously has a long history of memorable aliens, and it would be cool to see Harrelson go beyond just a standard human character.
