How Kingsman: The Golden Circle Screwed Over Female Fans

The sexism in the Kingsman movies is worth a point of discussion. Now to be fair, I never took issue with the first movie. Two of the points in question are (1),  Eggsy going to Valentine’s lair instead of Roxy, and (2), the ever famous anal sex gag with the Swedish princess.

My personal stance on both of those are as follows: Eggsy got into Valentine’s lair using Arthur’s invitation — which had a male name (I mean, the fact they didn’t put age on there is odd). As far as the anal joke with the princess, to me, it never seemed to be invasive or depriving Tilde of her power. With all of that being said, it’s a lot more apparent in the new film with the incredibly weak female characters, the disgustingly explicit fingering scene, and of course, killing off Roxy in the first ten minutes, that there is indeed a bit of sexism permeating the franchise.

Okay I am hearing a lot of you ask me, “They brought back characters before, haven’t they?” Harry is back in Golden Circle, as is Charlie, even though nobody asked for him. Well my take on this is that if you bring back dead characters too often, death begins to lose its impact. I would give a free pass to Harry, as long as they did it in a decent way, though in my opinion, they didn’t quite pull it off.

The fact they brought back Charlie was interesting, to further develop the nemesis role, but was it really worth throwing Roxy under the bus for? Going onto Merlin, not many of you will know this, but according to people who saw test screenings for the new Kingsman, Merlin was supposed to survive his death, and was originally seen at the end attending Eggsy’s wedding wearing prosthetic legs under his kilt. This pattern suggests that almost everyone can come back, so when all is said and done, it is possible that we’ll get to see more of Roxy, but the damage is done. It’s as if the film couldn’t manage to have a female Kingsman contemporary for long, which is a shame.

Matthew Vaughn, you had a great character here. Sadly, even having Ginger Ale, Julianne Moore’s Poppy, and Tilde isn’t enough. Simply having women around isn’t enough. It’s having them matter. You put Roxy in a great position to actually matter, and ultimately squandered it.

This is 2017, we have had Wonder Woman and Atomic Blonde show us that we aren’t in the 1950s anymore, and that we are the generation that will force a change not only for women, but for all minorities.

I suppose the biggest twist of the knife of all was how great of a character she ultimately was. To kill off a badly-written character is one thing, but to kill off such a well-written, under-utilized one is what made it sting all the worse.

It was unnecessary, Roxy was so much more than just a motivating factor for Eggsy to after the big baddie. Roxanne ‘Roxy’ Morton is a Kingsman, she earned her right and she earned our love. Women deserve better, the fans deserve better, Roxy deserves better!
