Is Marvel Eyeing A Rookie Director for ‘CAPTAIN MARVEL’?

It’s got very little in the way of actual evidence, but there’s an intriguing little rumor going around. Emily Carmichael is a filmmaker who’s directed several short films over the course of the last eight years, and has made a name for herself at indie festivals like TriBeCa, Sundance, SXSW, and so on. Her sensibilities as a filmmaker tend to be somewhat in line with what the Disney-owned Marvel Studios has done with the films in its Cinematic Universe.

Why am I bringing all this up? Well, there are some that think Carmichael is being courted to direct CAPTAIN MARVEL, an MCU film about the cosmic super heroine. The two bits of “evidence” that lend credence to this theory are as follows:

  1. She posted on her Instagram that she was on her way to a Disney meeting. She then changed that caption after folks took note of it.
  2. One of CAPTAIN MARVEL‘s screenwriters, Nicole Perlman, just started following her on Instagram.

Here’s the post in question:

Original Caption: "On my way to a Disney meeting."

Original Caption: “On my way to a Disney meeting.”

This isn’t much to go on, but this could be the first real breadcrumb that leads us to who will be handling the 2019 film. It should be noted that Marvel honcho Kevin Feige has publicly praised Fox’s DEADPOOL, which was also directed by a first-time feature director (Tim Miller), so the producer could very well be interested in taking a chance on a newbie if he feels they can really do the character justice.

What do you think of the possibility of Emily Carmichael cutting her feature filmmaking teeth on CAPTAIN MARVEL? Think there’s anything to this? Sound off below!
