Jai Courtney Defends SUICIDE SQUAD, Likens Marvel Films To An Orgy

There were many things that people complained about when it came to David Ayer’s DC bad guy team-up Suicide Squad. Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang wasn’t one of them.

Now the Aussie actor has come out with comments defending the film, and Ayer’s risky choices. Courtney argues that a project like Suicide Squad was always going to be polarizing because people expect crowd-pleasers when it comes to comic book films, yet it’s damn near impossible to make a film that’ll speak to a 30 year-old guy that will also appeal to a 12 year-old girl.

Here’s what Courtney said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast about Suicide Squad, which garnered fairly horrendous reviews:

“How do you please everyone? And I don’t think Suicide Squad ever intended to. So no one’s setting out to upset the fan base, certainly not a fan base that can be as loyal as this kind of crowd can. But I don’t know how you can push the envelope or try and protect something [without taking risks]. I know what I like in a movie, and it’s not the same thing as my twelve-year-old niece. It’s a challenge, and David [Ayer] did an incredible job, and I sure as hell hope we get to make another one with him.”

Of course, there are rumors that we may not have to wait for a Suicide Squad 2 to see more of Courtney as Boomerang. There have been whispers that he’ll pop up in Rick Famuyiwa’s The Flash, starring Ezra Miller. What does Courtney think of that?

“Is that the rumor? I like that rumor. I like that a lot.”

Up next, Courtney tackled Marvel. We all know that Marvel’s films have a reputation for being a tad on the fluffy side. We know that most of the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon are more about being fun than about being thought-provoking, but Courtney has a bit of a laugh when he talks about how fun the Marvel films are:

“Well DC is the still bad guy too, you know, and Marvel has this incredible formula that seems to work. They’ve had the time to let that sh*t marinate. Everything’s established now, we don’t have to figure out who anyone is. It’s like ‘Cool. Get them all together and let’s have a f*cking orgy and make a billion dollars.’”

Well, that certainly puts a new spin on the fun romps that Marvel/Disney seems content to churn out.

What’d you think of Courtney’s work as Captain Boomerang in Suicide Squad? The actor certainly sounds keen on returning for more DC mayhem, and I’d argue that his character didn’t get nearly enough time to shine in Ayer’s flick, so I’d welcome him back.
