Jay And Silent Bob Reboot Could Pave The Way For Mallrats 2

Jay and Silent Bob Reboot has officially hit theaters via Fathom Events and Kevin Smith’s roadshow, but it’s had quite a path to get to this point. As it turns out, Smith’s considers this path to have started way back with the initial draft of Clerks III. That film didn’t ultimately work out because Jeff Anderson wasn’t on board, so then he turned toward a potential Mallrats sequel.

In a recent interview Joblo, Smith revealed that in order to make, it, he’d need to either co-finance it or Universal to sign off on it. When they wouldn’t release it, he then tried to turn it into a series…and that ultimately led nowhere.

Perhaps the greatest bit of irony is that Universal is one of the backers for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, and according to Smith, they like the movie enough.

“We met with our bosses [at Universal] last month,” Smith told the outlet, “and they love [Jay and Silent Bob Reboot] and they were like, ‘what do you want to do next?’ And was like, ‘Funny you should ask. You guys have Mallrats, and I think I would like to do the Mallrats sequel that I was wanting to do a few years ago. And now that’s kind of what we’re moving towards. One fed the other.”

If there’s one thing you should know about the movie biz, it’s that nothing is set in stone. This is something that can very well fall apart, but given the method in which they’re releasing Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, Smith anticipates investors will be paid off by early next year. So while his movies may not be big hits, they will be safe investments, allowing him to move on to the next thing.

With this in mind, it looks like Smith has both Mallrats 2 and Clerks III in the works in the foreseeable future. So the View Akewniverse is alive and well.
