J.J. Abrams’ Alternate ‘STAR TREK’ Timeline Finally Gets an Official Name

Hardcore STAR TREK fans certainly have their issues with the recent J.J. Abrams film reboot of the franchise. Whereas the original series and its sequels were slow, thoughtful, and heady, the reboot was fast-paced, funny, and action-packed — pretty much everything those series weren’t. However, to its credit, rather than muddy the waters of the original timeline, the film created its own, alternate one, allowing for both universes to co-exist peacefully, and in many ways giving some fans a peace of mind that the series they loved wasn’t erased from existence.

However, up until this point, there was no name for the timeline. Some would call it the “STAR TREK Reboot Timeline,” some would call it the “Abramsverse,” which is a bit of a loaded term since it is directly attached to a specific filmmaker.

In a recent post from STAR TREK ONLINE, it was revealed that the name for this alternate timeline is “The Kelvin Timeline.” For those who don’t recall, this is a reference to the opening scene of the 2009 STAR TREK film wherein the U.S.S. Kelvin was attacked by the Romulan ship. This is the time-traveling Romulan ship that changes everything. It changes Kirk’s past, it changes Vulcan’s future, and everything in-between. As such, it is an incredibly fitting name since it’s the tree from which all the branches sprout.

So what was the reason for the timeline getting named? After all, it’s been seven years since that film hit theaters, so where did the sudden rush come from? Well, considering that there’s an upcoming CBS series on the way next year, perhaps they felt the need to make sure the timelines were as clear as can be. Up until now, the STAR TREK films have pretty much existed on their own, and with the universe expanding, the last thing they’d want is for the audiences to get confusing.

In addition to this, the folks at Screen Rant were especially astute at finding a tweet from CBS Consumer Products’ Holly Amos, who cited the need for the studio to have an easy way to reference the timeline.

Below is the tweet.
