Well, despite the fact that Furious 7 would've been a perfect note to end the Fast & Furious series on, there will be more. And according to Dwayne Johnson, there will also be more of his character: Hobbs.
The actor confirmed that Hobbs will appear in the eight film in the series at press conference for his latest, San Andreas. When asked, the actor answered, "Of course. It can't go on without Hobbs."
So despite the character only appearing in the latter three sequels, Johnson is very much of the mind that Hobbs has to be in every Furious film moving forward. But what about non-Furious films? In the past, there have been murmurs of a spinoff for Hobbs and Johnson was happy to address that:
"We all are interested in it. I just had a big conversation with the studio. So we’ll see. I still think for me personally we’ve created a little bit of space for him in 7 and the gauge is set for what the audience will want. That’s my take on it, you know, but a lot of other people have to have input."
He's right. There could be some fun avenues to explore with that character. Especially with his backstory- where he transitioned from being a bounty hunter who became a US Marshal, thus giving him the resources to be the government's version of the best bounty hunter on the planet. Be it a prequel, or an old case from his solo days coming back to haunt him in the present, there could definitely be some interesting stories to come from there.
Furious 8 is slated for an April 14, 2017 release.
