Joker Origin Movie: Death Note’s Lakeith Stanfield Wants To Play The Joker

While we’re still a bit apprehensive regarding the DC Extended Universe as a whole, there’s no denying that there’s still a lot of promise to be had with the impending DC films. This can especially be said of the impending standalone Joker film, which is set to be directed by The Hangover director Todd Phillips and produced by Martin Scorsese.

Unlike all the other films on the DC slate right now, this Joker film won’t be confined to the world of the DCEU. Instead, Warner Bros. will allow the filmmakers to tell exactly the story they want with no pressure to connect it to a greater universe. Given that Warner Bros. is a director-focused studio, this is actually fantastic news that helps open up the possibilities for these characters, allowing them to think outside the box.

One outside the box aspect could be utilized in the casting of the Joker himself. Death Note actor Lakeith Stanfield recently took to Twitter to announce his interesting playing the iconic Clown Prince of Crime.

This is indeed a different perspective than what we’re used to with the Joker. Generally speaking, the Joker is portrayed as a white person, though there’s nothing inherent in the character that makes this a necessity. Stanfield is an actor who has definitely proven his ability to rise to the occasion of difficult roles. He recently set the screen on fire in the Netflix Death Note film, and while folks can argue about the quality of the film, the consensus seems to be that Stanfield did a fantastic job at bringing L to life.

With Stanfield’s willingness to go deep into a character, and Warner Bros.’ ability to think outside the box with this upcoming film, this is actually a match that could be worth checking out.
