Jon Snow’s True Parentage Revealed in ‘GAME OF THRONES’? [SPOILERS]

Author’s Note: This article will contain spoilers for the series GAME OF THRONES. Even for those caught up with the show, this will contain information not directly revealed in the series proper up to this point.

SPOILER ALERT!

One of the big questions in GAME OF THRONES has been the question of who Jon Snow’s mother is — at least at the start. Not far into the series’ run, however, it was clear that having a bastard son wasn’t really in character for Ned. And so, the big question of his overall parentage became a thing. Who are his parents, and why did Ned Stark claim him as his bastard — especially since the idea of a bastard grew to become quite the sore point between him in Catelyn in their marriage? What secrets did Ned take to his grave with him?

In season six finale of GAME OF THRONES, entitled “The Winds of Winter,” it was revealed that Ned Stark is actually the uncle of Jon Snow, as the child was the offspring of Ned’s sister, Lyanna Stark. In her dying breaths, Lyanna confides a secret in Ned — one that was essentially inaudible to viewers. This move from HBO to “mask” the audio seemed to leave Jon Snow’s father’s identity a secret. But, of course, the internet is a thing, and certain viewers have gone in and tampered with the sound mix for all to hear.

Take a listen below.

As you were able to hear in the audio, Lyanna stated the following:

“His name is …. If Robert finds out, he’ll kill him. You know he will. You have to protect him. Promise me Ned. Promise me.”

Once Robert Baratheon seized the throne from the Mad King Aerys Targaryen, he became quite the paranoid soul, and set out to kill any remaining offspring. This continued into the beginning of the series, and as we saw in the show’s first season, he went so far as to hire assassins to take out Danaerys, the last remaining Targaryen (at least the last remaining known Targaryen who hadn’t taken the black). It’s reasonable to assume that her statement has something to do with this, as this is the only subject in which Robert seemed absolutely ruthless.

So what does that mean for Jon Snow? It’s been speculated that he is the child of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, Danaerys’ older brother who was killed prior to the start of the first season.

What’s more, HBO themselves confirmed this bit of speculation through a recently-released infographic, which link Lyanna and Rhaegar to Jon as his parents.

Check out that infographic below!

So, as speculated by many hardcore fans of the books and the series, it looks like there is indeed a bit of fire in Snow, after all.
