Justice League Dark: New Rumored Director For Following Doug Liman’s Departure

The winding tale of Justice League Dark continues. This is one movie that can’t seem to catch a break or gain anymomentum. For the longest time, fan favorite filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was attached to bring the project to the big screen. However, like with many of del Toro’s projects in the past, he ultimately had to drop out. Stepping in to take his place was Doug Liman, who hopped on over from the long-gestating Gambit standalone flick.

The film continued its development over the course of the next year and a half. Then, last week, Liman dropped out. It made sense. Liman has another big sci-fi project in the form of Chaos Walking, and he’s also got the impending sequel for the Edge of Tomorrow sequel, Live Die Repeat and Repeat.

With Liman no longer at the helm, there would be an inevitable volley of rumored directors to take his place. one director who slipped through the cracks of our reporting was Andy Muschietti, director of Mama and the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s IT. He’s a great choice, given the horror-esque themes of many of the characters, but I personally hoped they’d settle on someone else, as I much prefer to see Muschietti finish with an IT sequel, which is set to follow the adults.

Well, there’s another filmmaker potentially in the running. According to May 25th’s episode of Meet the Movie Press, Damián Szifron is another candidate for the director’s chair. You’ll be forgiven if the name doesn’t sound familiar, as he’s an Argentinian filmmaker doesn’t have a lot of experience in Hollywood. He has a LOT of experience in Mexican TV, but the closest thing he’s had to Hollywood success is his film Wild Tales, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Riding high off that, he was tapped to pen the script for the Six Billion Dollar Man, a remake of The Six Million Dollar Man.

Obviously, nothing has come of that project yet, but this latest rumor shows that he’s still in the Hollywood mix, even if he hasn’t quite broken out yet. Of course, as of right now, this is just a rumor, and there are likely plenty of other filmmakers in the running to take up Justice League Dark. Will this movie ever see the light of day? We have our doubts. Warner Bros. seems to be having a hard enough time with the Justice League proper, so we’ll see how things pan out for this project. However, given the growing trend of lower budget properties that skew close to the source material, perhaps there is a world where Justice League Dark could be successful.
