Justice League: Parademons — What Are They And Why Are They Important?

With the Justice League film hitting theaters everywhere this week, the marketing department at Warner Bros. Pictures has been “ALL IN” making sure that these beloved heroes are everywhere we look. They have even gone as far helping us get to know each of the heroes in social media clips.

What about some of the foes that they are going to be facing? In previous articles we have talked about Steppenwolf, and right now I would like to focus on the “minions” that will bet terrorizing the planet commanded by Steppenwolf: the Parademons.

Who are they? Why do they matter? What will their role be in the film, apart from cannon fodder (Probably not much, honestly)?

Parademons were created by the legendary Jack Kirby and first appeared in DC Comics’ New Gods #1 in March of 1971. These creatures are Darkseid’s personal army from the planet of Apokolips.

In the early days, these creatures were created in labs and then trained by Granny Goodness, who made sure that each and everyone of them had an interminable sense of loyalty and obedience to Darkseid. Post-Flashpoint, Parademons were created by using the bodies of various species, living or dead, that they genetically decimate for raw material, then turn into mindless drones that only obey and serve Darkseid and his Generals.

Parademons have superhuman strength and seem to have an high endurance for pain. Since they are more of a hive mind mentality, they do not have very good communication skills and are not very smart. Thanks to their training on Apokolips they are ruthless and efficient when sent out. They have Apokaliptain armor that also gives them the ability to fly, and their wings are razor sharp along the edges, and can also be used as lethal weapons. They can also project fire from their mouths, and if in a losing situation can self-destruct. Though well-equipped for battle, their strength comes from their numbers, usually being able to overwhelm their opposition.

They have been featured in many of the animated series like The Super Friends, Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Superman: The Animated Series. They’ve also appeared in the Justice League Heroes video game where the player must face the Parademons before fighting Darkseid.

So why are they important? Because their arrival usually means that Darkseid is not far behind. In the DCEU we saw their first appearance in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice during Bruce Wayne’s dream sequence when they were commanded by an enraged Superman. Although an alternate future, their appearance made it clear to fans of what was to come in the DCEU without having to reaveal too much.

Now, in the second stage of a Darkseid invasion is the arrival of his General, Steppenwolf, with the army of Parademons that will be showed in Justice League this week, which means that it is only a matter of time before we see the ruler of Apokolips make a grand entrance in the DCEU.

If you want to see the Parademons before the Justice League this weekend, a good starting point to see them in action is the Warner Bros. Animation film Justice League: War, which was released in 2014. You can also see them in the comic book series that this film is based on, DC’s New 52 Justice League #1 through #6 written by Geoff Johns and artwork by Jim Lee and Scott Williams.

It will be interesting to see how Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon have decided to portray these genteically mutated soliders that will be tossed around by the League In Justice League. We only have a couple of days to wait and see, and we can’t wait. Are you excited to finally see them in action against the League? Or more excited about what it means going forward?
