Star Wars needs some directorial talent.

As of right now, there are only three filmmakers who Lucasfilm has seemingly gotten along with, and they’re Rian Johnson, J.J. Abrams, and Ron Howard. While that’s all well and good, the only problem this is a franchise that will likely continue every year in perpetuity.

With that in mind, the studio does need to bring some new blood on board, and there’s one filmmaker who Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy thinks would make a great fit: Thor: Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi. Speaking with the New Zealand outlet, Newshub, Kennedy said the following regarding Waititi.

“I would love for him to direct a Star Wars movie. I think he has exactly the right sensibility. It was very exciting to see him step into the Marvel universe and do such an amazing job with Thor.”

We couldn’t agree more. While some may argue that his sensibilities may be too comedic, it’s important to point out that, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars is a franchise that needs to explore other genres in order to stay fresh over time.

Plus, it’s incredibly easy to look at Thor: Ragnarok and think “Oh, well that’s too much Taika.” However, the fact is, that while Marvel gave the man a lot of freedom, they would occasionally give him notes to course correct his vision, as stated by Waititi in numerous interviews. He’s displayed a real willingness to correct based on feedback, and it’s obviously worked out great.

Now, all that needs to happen is for him and Lucasfilm to get on the same page BEFORE the cameras start rolling. As long as that happens, there’s no reason he couldn’t helm a fun space adventure under the Star Wars brand.

What do you think? Would you like to see Waititi take the helm of a Star Wars flick? Let us know your thoughts down below!

I’d love to see a Rogue Squadron series of films starring Poe and the son/daughter of Porkins. Unless, twist, Poe IS the son of Porkins and changed his last name because being named Poe Porkins is a Hell no one should experience.

      Lol Poe Porkins!

  • Fluke Skycrawler

Yea, right. With all the ad libbing that went on in Thor, I doubt that he would last. That’s why the directors of The Solo movie were fired.

      Precisely.

he seems like he would do well.. but probably in a spinoff anthology film.. the main trilogy is too rigid i think for him

Ok, but as alluded to in this article Waititi is a comedic and improvisational director: the exact same sensibilities that appear to have cost Lord and Miller their directing jobs. I like the guy and I like what he did with Thor but I don’t think he’d deliver a film that felt Star Warsy.

I think the right spinoff could work really well for him. Thinking that he could turn something like an Ewok (just and example) adventure into something brilliant and fun.
