Kenneth Choi Joins ‘SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING’ in Second MCU Role

In an interesting move from Marvel and Sony, actor Kenneth Choi has joined the cast of SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, the first solo outing of the webslinger since the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN series imploded in on itself in a not-so-glorious fashion. According to Deadline, the actor will be playing the school principal — and one can only assume that means Peter Parker’s school principal (it’d be weird if it didn’t).

This is especially noteworthy in that it puts Choi in limited company as an actor who’s portrayed different roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If you’ll recall, he also played Jim Morita of the Howling Commandos in 2011’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER and TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. While this isn’t completely new territory, Choi may very well be the first actor to play two fairly prominent roles in the same universe (though I suppose his role in HOMECOMING could be minimal). Perhaps the closest thing we have to this is with Paul Bettany, who played both JARVIS and Vision, but the big difference there is that that played off a natural progression of the story, and one can argue that JARVIS and Vision aren’t completely different entities.

I’m probably reading into this, but it would be cool if Peter’s principal offhandedly mentions that his grandfather or great-grandfather served in WWII. I doubt this would actually play into the plot in any way, but it would be an interesting way to connect things to the past a bit more (though I’m sure many would be annoyed that everyone seems to know everyone in this world). This move does seem a bit odd, and I’d like to think that Marvel Studios and Sony have some kind of ace up their sleeves in regards to this casting choice.

Kenneth Choi will be joining other returning actors to the MCU, which include Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May/Aunt May.

What do you think? Is Kenneth Choi’s casting an indication of some bigger part of the MCU from the studios, or a simple casting coincidence? Let us know your thoughts down below!

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is set to hit theaters on July 17, 2017.
