Kevin Feige’s Making A Star Wars Movie: What Could This Mean For The Marvel And Star Wars Franchises?

It is a period of Civil War in the Star Wars FANDOM. Prequel Sympathisers striking from their hidden basement have won their first victory against the mighty Old Trilogists by attacking their plans for a new powerful Sequel Trilogy.

The fate of the fandom hangs in the balance as CREATIVE KNIGHTS J.J. Abrams, Benioff and Weiss, and Rian Johnson attempt to save the FANDOM from the bile of the Prequels. But the failure of the CREATIVE KNIGHTS to stem the tide is apparent, with all three facing rebellions in the FANDOM of their own.

In a last desperate bid for justice, Master Iger has turned to his greatest student Kevin Feige, currently on duty in the Unknown Regions. With Feige’s Marvel mission complete, can he finally restore peace and justice in the FANDOM….

Ok, so all joking aside, the news that Kevin Feige is going to be making a Star Wars movie and stepping across the corridor from Marvel to Lucasfilm is a pretty big story this week. Let’s face it, we still know nothing about what this entails or what ramifications it could have for both of Disney’s franchise juggernauts.

Is Feige only making one movie? That would be very unlike Star Wars, and one movie doesn’t really allow much in the way of creative freedom, certainly not in the way Feige has been used to telling long form stories across several movies in the MCU. Yet, until we hear different, one movie is all we can say for certain.

We also know that officially this does not hint at Feige taking over from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in any way. The press statement was very specific about that, at least in an official sense. We also have no idea when would expect to see this movie materialize, is it soon, is it ten years from now? Will this in anyway affect the plans Lucasfilm currently have for a Benioff and Weiss trilogy and a Rian Johnson trilogy? All good questions, and finally, who is the MCU star that Feige already has in mind for his Star Wars movie? I don’t have the answers for any of these questions, but let’s use a little bit of guess work and see where we end up shall we?

Kennedy Inside Out:

As said above Alan Horn was very specific that Feige and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy were working together on this project. Is that enough to dismiss the idea that Kennedy could be looking for a road out eventually, well, no. That doesn’t mean this is all some elaborate way to give Kennedy a back door soon to leave Lucasfilm, but you’ve got to think she won’t want to be doing this forever and a day. Would some crossover with Feige now, help with a transition that’s already planned for many years down the line? That’s possible and let’s be fair, there is no way Disney would have any interest in sharing those kind of plans with anyone outside of their own four walls.

So yes, this is a possible for some time down the line, but do I think Feige is going to replace Kennedy as Lucasfilm president anytime soon? No, that seems very unrealistic to me. There was a time when no franchise could feasibly compare with Star Wars, but that’s just not right now; right now, the franchise that takes all the spotlight and makes the most money in movies is the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You do not take your quarterback from your pro side, to go play with the juniors because they need a hand. What you may do is let the quarterback go play a game with the juniors to give them a boost.

One Film, Two Film, Few Film?

If Kevin Feige is as big a Star Wars fan as we are led to believe, and you have the trust and respect of everyone at Disney, would you make one Star Wars movie, or develop a two-part story or a trilogy? I’m going to guess that whatever Feige comes up with will be at least a story told over two movies, maybe even a trilogy itself, which Star Wars is pretty famously structured around. But Kevin Feige is a producer right, so who could he get to make his Star Wars film for him? It would have to be a team he really trusted, writers he can work with, and directors who he can bank on. Oh, that’s right, the Russos and their writing partners Markus and McFeeley are currently franchise-free aren’t they?

What a coup it would be if Feige announced that he was making a movie or a series of movies with the team that destroyed the box office with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, not to mention the super successful Civil War and the fan favourite The Winter Soldier. The Russos have already been saying how much they love Star Wars since they finished in the MCU, and I have said before in article, and to my colleagues here at LRM, that I totally can see this team on Star Wars, eventually.

Yeah, I know the Russos and the rest of the guys at AGBO are currently enjoying a few passion projects, but no one said this Feige-produced Star Wars movie was going to film next week, did they? If Benioff and Weiss are doing their thing currently, and no other release dates are set for any other Star Wars movies outside of their trilogy, this could give ample time for Feige to slot his number one team into something they seemingly would relish the chance to do. It could be some time before we get any further details, but if the news ever breaks regarding the Russos doing Star Wars, then remember I’ve been calling it since July 2019.

Fan-Favorite Rian Johnson

Yeah, Johnson is someone who absolutely divides the fan base, along with our own comments section. Some fans think Johnson’s trilogy will never happen, some are saddened because they are worried those people might be right. Ultimately every time this subject has been broached, Johnson has quashed the rumor mill with one swift stroke. The thing with Johnson is, that I am not sure how well developed his ideas really are, I think Johnson is the type would like to make sure the story works for a trilogy before agreeing anything like production dates to release date for his movies.

What’s the rush with Johnson, I guess? Lucasfilm have the next trilogy lined up, they have some great looking Disney+ shows on the way, and realistically they have the time to just let Johnson be creative. Despite me not being a fan of The Last Jedi, I actually think Johnson is a good director, I just didn’t like some of the humor and the character choices he made in his movie, because it was Episode 8 of a 9 movie series. However, the one thing Star Wars needs for me is time for creatives to be creative, I always felt like the sequel trilogy was too rushed, and too designed to make the money back Disney spent purchasing the franchise in as quick a time as possible. So I’d be willing to see what Johnson could come up with on his own, a complete start to finish story could work for him. So, no I don’t see any change to the Johnson situation with this news. (Famous last words)

A New Superhero For the Star Wars Films

This is simply the question of which MCU actor Feige means when he says he has someone in mind for that movie. I think there are a few actors we can rule out via having already played characters in the Star Wars universe. Natalie Portman is a definite no, one would also think Paul Bettany who appeared in Solo was out, and then there is Samuel L. Jackson. I’m not quite ready to rule out Jackson yet, especially since he repeatedly keeps insisting his character Mace Windu could have, and should have survived that fall in Revenge of the Sith, however, I don’t think that’s what Feige means.

It could literally be any of the actors he has worked with in the MCU, but one gets the impression he is referencing someone he has been working with from the start, and I don’t think it’s RDJ. The two candidates I’d place highest on the possibilities list would be Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans. Both are now finished in the MCU, both still the perfect age to take the lead in a Star Wars movie.

I could be totally wrong about this of course, maybe you have your own thoughts on this one, I’ve heard a rumor kicking around on social media regarding Brie Larsson already, but that rumor seems to have no substance to it other than someone suggesting the name and others commenting on what they think of that. So far no one seems to know anything about this, but my guess work certainly leads me to ScarJo and Evans. I guess we will have to wait and see on that front.

Overall I see this as a positive move, I’d love to see what Feige can do in the Galaxy, far, far away, and I’m not worried at all that he is leaving the MCU anytime soon. Further down the line though, who knows? I can for sure that I have more confidence in Feige as a producer than I do Benioff ad Weiss after the way they rushed the final two seasons of Game of Thrones, seemingly to get into Star Wars as quickly as they could.
