SDCC 2016: Kevin Feige Teases Baby Groot In GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2: “He’s Not Mentally A Baby”

Before GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY hit theaters a couple years back, it was one of the biggest question marks in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Could the studio turn one of the most obscure properties into a successful film franchise? The answer, of course, was a resounding “yes,” and as of now, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 is one of the most anticipated titles out there.

One of the favorite characters of the film was that of Groot, the walking, talking, deadly tree with a heart of gold. The first film surprised audiences — not only when Groot sacrificed himself, but when he came back in the form of a small, baby twig. Despite his short appearance during the credits, Baby Groot was a runaway hit character, and surprisingly enough, Marvel and James Gunn weren’t quite sure if this baby version of the character would be the way they’d go in GUARDIANS 2, as revealed by Marvel Head Kevin Feige in a recent interview with Collider.

“We had talked about what to do with Groot, because we have left him as the little twig. And at that time, he said, ‘I don’t know, maybe he gets big again. I’m not sure.’ And I was secretly hoping he wouldn’t just be full-sized Groot again. And then in the treatment it was revealed he was gonna be about this size. And very cute. And very deadly.”

One of the big questions to come out of the film — apart from Star-Lord’s parentage — was whether or not Groot was really dead. Was the baby form essentially a new creature altogether, or was he actually Groot in a miniature form?

Feige also answered this burning question:

“He remembers. He’s not mentally a baby, he is still Groot… I sort of equate it to Spock circa the end of SEARCH FOR SPOCK and THE VOYAGE HOME.”

A pretty apt comparison. Finally, Feige teased the heart of this film. Apart from the comedy in the first one, there was no denying that it also had a lot of heart, and a good deal of that came with the relationship between Groot and Rocket. Apparently, we can expect a lot more of that in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2.

“When it comes to a GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY film, a James Gunn script, it’s not just about the funny, it’s not just about the action, it’s about the heart. And the amount of heart that you get out of this trash panda raccoon and now this little twig baby Groot is actually awe-inspiring. It is amazing what he’s done with those two characters.”

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
