4K/BLU-RAY/ DIGITAL HD SPECIAL FEATURES
· Audio Commentary with writer/director Damien Chazelle and composer Justin Hurwitz
I have never really been a big fan of listening to audio commentary during a film because most of the time it feels forced by the director or producer. You can tell that this movie was Damien Chazelle's passion project by the way he describes every scene it makes you feel in his mind. Composer Justin Hurwitz contribution is just as equal to Damien giving the audience insight to the music selection and how the music set the tone for the scenes.
· “Another Day of Sun: They Closed Down a Freeway” Featurette
The opening music number from La La Land is iconic and a tribute to the musicals of the 1950's and 60's. This behind the scenes extra gives an in-depth look and the amount of work it took to capture the opening scene. While it would've have been easier to shoot the entire sequence on a green screen Damien is a traditionalist who sets the goal of shooting the entire scene in one camera shot.
· “La La Land's Great Party” Featurette
A behind the scenes look that shows how much fun everyone had in making the movie.
· “Ryan Gosling: Piano Student” Featurette
A short extra but an interesting look on how Ryan Gosling was able to play all of the music in the movie. Gosling was determined to play every piece of piano music in the movie and with insufficient time to learn how to read music he had to learn by watching someone else play the music. Without a doubt this made me appreciate Ryan Gosling as an actor and his dedication to his work.
· “Before Whiplash: Damien Chazelle's Passion Project” Featurette
This is a great featurette on Damien and gives a background of the critically acclaimed actor. To hear his thought process makes you understand how he was able to make this movie as a young man.
· “La La Land's Love Letter to Los Angeles” Featurette
For residents of Los Angeles and the surrounding areas will greatly appreciate this featurette which is a massive love story of the city.
· “The Music of La La Land” Featurette
A look at Justin Hurwitz's work composing all of the music for the film.
· “John Legend's Acting Debut” Featurette
The title of the featurette explains it all.
· “The Look of Love: Designing La La Land” Featurette
An behind the scenes look of the set designs for the movie.
· “Ryan and Emma: Third Time’s the Charm” Featurette
A brief documentary of Ryan and Emma's history working together.
· “Epilogue: The Romance of the Dream” Featurette
This was my favorite piece of all the extras added to the movie. Damien and the crew share their love and passion about making the epilogue scene. My favorite scene of the movie was the epilogue and it was great to hear Damien explain the details and work it took into making this scene.
· Damien & Justin Sing: The Demos
· Song Selection
Overall if you were a fan of the movie or are just curious about all the hysteria about this movie, you need to buy this movie. The featurettes add enough content to this movie that you could spend an entire day appreciating this work of art. Make sure to go get your copy of La La Land tomorrow.
