Last Minute Holiday Gift Guide for Blu-Rays and DVDs

– by Gig Patta

It’s almost time for Christmas.

Many consumers are waiting for the last minute to complete their holiday shopping. Alas, the best present under the Christmas tree is still the gift of movies.

To make you choices easier, there are plenty of movies in 2016 that will delight any casual movie watcher and collector.

Let us give you some suggestions of some of the best 2016 movies available now on Blu-ray, DVD and digital downloads.

WALT DISNEY STUDIOS

FINDING DORY – A perfect follow-up sequel to 2003’s FINDING NEMO. Dory meets new characters at an aquarium in California in search for her long, long parents. The story is mesmerizing and unforgettable (unlike a certain fish). A-

PETE’S DRAGON – A great story about friendship between a boy and his dragon. Although it’s not like the expected part-animated comedy Disney film from the late 1970s, this updated version has a much more serious tale fitting to be a sit down movie for the entire family. B

The BFG – Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s book is an absolute delight for fans. The special effects are amazing with great details of the different giants up close and their world. Although adults may find this a bore, this is a kid story and children do love the humor and adventure from this film. B-

ZOOTOPIA – This is by far one of my favorite animated movies in 2016. The concept and plot is very unique with plenty of twists and turns. Not to mention, the film managed to blend humor and lessons in “animal” discriminations that could teach children against the ideas of prejudices. A

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST – The 25th anniversary edition is issued this year for Disney’s signature collection…..just in time for before the live-action version hits the theaters next year. This is a must have Disney animation with its addictive sing-along song and spectacular animated visuals that set the bar for Disney animation over two decades ago. A

MARVEL’S CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR – Supposedly the final film for the Captain America series, it leaves a lasting impression with a fast-action paced plot with you cheering on either for Captain America or Iron Man. And that airport fight scene—it has to be the best comic book hero fight so far on film. B+

LIONSGATE

THE HUNGER GAMES 4K 4-FILM COLLECTION – Although 4K is starting to be in households everywhere, no doubt THE HUNGER GAMES should be part of any movie collector’s shelf. The sharp visuals will immerse you into the world of Katniss Everdeen as you battles for the freedom of the country. The collection will also include Blu-ray disc versions, but it’s highly recommended with its top visuals. B

SWISS ARMY MAN – As someone who grew up with WEEKEND AT BERNIE’S, SWISS ARMY MAN is a hilarious comedy that keeps you laughing with a playful dead body. You’ll laugh so much in this film, you’ll forget Daniel Radcliffe was Harry Potter in the past. B
