Latest Punisher Teaser Evokes Classic Stallone Film

A decorated combat veteran, on the run from the authorities, turns the tables on his pursuers and becomes the hunter. Pretty cool logline, right? Seems somehow familiar, though.

No, we’re not talking about the plot to Marvel and Netflix’s upcoming The Punisher series (at least, I don’t think so). A new teaser for The Punisher, called “Surprise,” reveals an exciting and violent commando sequence, which is also highly reminiscent of an early Sylvester Stallone film… it jumped right out at me, but I could be wrong. You tell me.

CBR just posted a link to The Punisher‘s official Twitter account, which contains this latest teaser, all 20 seconds of it:

While the editing and camera work are pretty choppy, there’s no doubt about the intense, visceral nature in this footage. Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) races through a sparse forest, evading a pair of camouflaged and heavily armed mercenaries. Castle gets the drop on each of them, burying his Ka-Bar knife in their squishy soft parts (judging by their horrific screams). He ends the clip by looking into one of the merc’s helmet cams, passing along a message, “I’m coming for you.”

You figured it out, right? This teaser feels like a scene lifted right out of Stallone’s First Blood (1982), wherein angry Vietnam veteran, John Rambo, stalks a small-town Sheriff’s posse through the Oregon back country. If you’ll recall, Rambo favored his knife quite a lot in that film, which he used to both survive the elements and pare down his enemies. This teaser feels like a total nod and homage to First Blood, which is A-OK by me!

Whether or not the First Blood connection is intended, this short teaser only reinforces that the mayhem and violence of Daredevil Season 2 was merely a jumping off point for The Punisher. As Rambo famously said in his film, “They drew first blood, not me.” Bring on the hurt Netflix, we can’t wait!

Did you get the First Blood connection or do you think that I need to get outside and enjoy some fresh air? Let us know in the comments down below!

The Punisher hits Netflix this fall (rumor has it on Nov 10-11, 2017).
