LIVE BY NIGHT Final Trailer: Witness The Price Of The American Dream

The gangster genre has been in need a good film for a while. Black Mass was an all right movie, but it didn’t quite live up to expectations. Gangster Squad underwhelmed on all fronts. Given director Ben Affleck’s experience with the crime genre in The Town, there was little denying that the Oscar-winning talent would be an amazing fit to helm a gangster flick. Perhaps he could mold a new classic for a new generation of the genre’s fans.

A couple months back, we had our first trailer for Live By Night, a film from Affleck, based on the Dennis Lehane novel of the same name. Set in the Roaring ‘20s, Live By Night tells the story of Joe Coughlin, son of a law-abiding police superintendent, who opted for the life of an outlaw. As with most films in this genre, things go haywire when he crosses the wrong mob boss.

If that first trailer wasn’t enough to wet your whistle, perhaps this one will be more up your alley. It’s a shorter one, no arguments there, but as with most second trailers, it’s much more focused on the story and conflict.

Check it out below:

As indicated by the trailer’s title, this isn’t only the second trailer, but it looks to be the final trailer we’ll get before the film hits limited release on Christmas day. Granted, I’m sure there will be a few TV spots meant to draw Oscar-hungry viewers, but this is likely the most in-depth look we’ll get at the movie, which is actually pretty nice. In an era full of trailers that seem to give away far too much, it’s refreshing when we’re given a tone, a premise, and sent on our merry way.

While I was a bit underwhelmed by that first trailer we got, I have to say, this one really hit the spot with me. I’m not usually one sold on visuals, and as pretty as the film looked in that first one, I usually need some sort of emotional ties and story to really draw me in. As limited as this was on that front, between the little bit of story we got, my faith in Affleck’s talents, and the hypnotic music, it was just enough to get me on board for what we can all hope is a worthy Oscar contender for next year.
