Logan Director On The Future Of X-23 In The X-Men Universe

Of all the fantastic elements and themes James Mangold left fans with in his Wolverine swansong, Logan, one in particular, X-23, has stuck with fans since the minute the movie ended.

Amid the foreboding tone that the film carried throughout, the relationship between Laura/X-23 and Logan was indeed one of the more powerful parts of the film, and left something of a souvenir for fans to cherish after the film was over. The relationship is reminiscent of the one between Jean Reno’s and Natalie Portman’s character in The Professional.

Mangold was asked during the premiere for Logan Noir (the black-and-white version of the film), if he thought there were more X-23 stories to tell.

“Anything’s possible,” Mangold said. “I’ve certainly talked to them about it. I even talked to them about it before we made the movie. I thought she was just such a great character, but with what Dafne did, I think that certainly that’s possible.”

This actually sounds promising, having discussed the future of X-23 with executives before Logan was made shows Mangold liked the character from the beginning. Mangold also seems to be quite fond of actress Dafne Keen as well.

While the decision is not up to Mangold, it is safe to assume that with the success of Logan, Mangold’s opinion could very well carry some heavy clout with the studio.

If the studio heads did decide they wanted to produce more X-23 content,  be it  a solo effort or throwing her into the X-Men movies, one question would be, do they keep her the same age, and allow the character to grow on screen along with the actress? Or would it be better to age the character and recast the role?

Now that Hugh Jackman is done with Wolverine, the universe needs another claw wielding hero to fill the void.  So on that alone it makes sense for studio executives to at least consider keeping X-23 around. Of course, at some point a new actor will inevitably be cast to fill some very large claws as The Wolverine, but who really knows how far into the future that may be.

Would you want to see more of X-23?
