LRMOnline Comic Book Contributor’s Best of 2016 (Part 2 of 4) Independent Comic books

Yesterday we covered our teams picks for DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Today we venture out into the vast world of independent comics, which pretty much covers the rest of the comic book industry. What makes this interesting is that a lot of these independent books are creator’s “passion projects” just take a moment and look at all the amazing books that Image as well as Aftershock comics are putting out month to month. Comic books like this usually are amazing due to the fact that you can see how much the creative teams enjoy working on the book. Here are some of our favorites for 2016:

FAVORITE Independent Comics Books:

Replica

Publisher: Aftershock Comics

Written by Paul Jenkins

Artwork by Andy Clarke

Picked by:

Jace Milam – This title from new publisher AfterShock can be summed up in one word; FUN! Springing from the mind of writer Paul Jenkins and artist Andy Clarke, this is a sci-fi tale set on a huge space-station, that never takes itself too seriously. The result is an adventurous tale containing laugh out loud humor.

Paper Girls

Publisher: Image Comics

Written by Brian K. Vaughan

Artwork by Cliff Chiang & Matt Wilson

Picked by:

Kat Calamia – One of my favorite titles on my pull list! The mystery behind Paper Girls gets more and more intriguing as the “Paper Girls” dig deeper into the mythology of their world. I was most impressed this year by the bond Erin made with her older self, and I hope to see more of this in 2017.

The Fix

Publisher: Image Comics

Written by Nick Spencer

Artwork by Steve Lieber

Picked by:

Jeremy Scully

Croak

Publisher: Alterna Comics

Written by Cody Andrew Sousa

Artwork by Francesco Laquinta

Pickedby:

Tim Jousma – They told one hell of a story in its limited run. I really loved the story itself as well as the work Alterna is putting out there.

Pursued By A Bear

Publisher: Self

Written by Jackson Navarra

Artwork by Joey Navarra

Picked by:

Michael Connally- Got to meet these two at Heroes Con and sit down and talk with them for a while.  This comic is fun for everyone to read.

Postal

Publisher: Top Cow Productions Inc. / Image Comics

Written by Bryan Edward Hill & Matt Hawkins

Artwork by Isaac Goodhart

Picked by:

Emmanuel Gomez- This is storytelling at its best. Through the first 16 issues we have seen the growth of so many of Eden’s characters and even a great crossover event with “The Thithe” and “Think Tank”. Now with a few trades available, I guaranteethis one is hard to put down. So good in fact that this series is now being developed for a television show on HULU.
