Margot Robbie Defends [SPOILER] Role In Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Disclaimer: This post contains potential spoilers for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Okay, first off, I feel the need to defend the spoiler tag I put up in the title of the article. Nothing here definitively gives anything away in terms of plot, but there are enough hints and comments that I wanted to at least respect the potential audience and Tarantino’s wishes that no spoilers be shared. At the end of the day, we do want to kind of be wowed along the way, so I’d hate to take that from everyone.

But as far as Quentin Tarantino’s latest film, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, one big question mark has been that of the “character” of Sharon Tate, played by the great Margot Robbie. Tate was a real-life victim of the Manson family, and given that this film takes place at the same time as her murder, the big question has been if she will have a big role and if she will survive the movie.

At a recent press conference, however, at the Cannes Film Festival, a reporter asked why Robbie was given such a limited role in the movie — specifically, whey she didn’t speak very much. Tarantino responded, simply saying, “I reject your hypothesis” before Robbie herself answered, saying:

“I always look to the character and what the character is supposed to serve to the story. I think the moments I was on screen gave a moment to honor Sharon. I don’t think it was intended to delve deeper,” Robbie said. “I think the tragedy was the loss of innocence. To show the wonderful sides of her could be done without speaking. I did feel like I got a lot of time to explore the character without dialogue, which is an interesting thing… Rarely do I get an opportunity to spend so much time on my own as a character going through a day-to-day existence.”

So why do I consider this a spoiler? While I cannot say for sure, it does seem to hint at the idea that this character’s involvement will be cut short with her murder — a murder we weren’t sure would take place, as Tarantino has a tendency to rewrite history.

All the same, this could ultimately be much ado about nothing. For all we know she is involved a lot and does live, but just doesn’t speak much. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
