Director Steven Spielberg seems to have Mark Rylance fever. After collaborating with the actor in last year's BRIDGE OF SPIES, Spielberg went on to work with him again in this year's THE BFG. Now it looks like Spielberg will be working with the Oscar-winning actor again in his upcoming adaptation of READY PLAYER ONE.
According to THR, Rylance is in final negotiations to join the growing cast of the science fiction film, which is based on the Ernest Cline novel of the same name. The outlet continued, stating that working around the dates for Rylance is proving especially tricky, as the actor is also attached to star in Christopher Nolan's upcoming WWII epic, DUNKIRK. But unless something else emerges, it looks like the actor will indeed be able to commit to both films.
So far, READY PLAYER ONE is set to star Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Simon Pegg, and Ben Mendelsohn. It is unclear at this point which role Rylance will be taking on.
The synopsis for the book on which the film is based is as follows:
"In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.
But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape."
