Martin Scorsese Stupidly Says Marvel Movies Are ‘Not Cinema’

It’s hard not to look at certain filmmakers with a certain amount of reverence. One of those figures is Martin Scorsese, the mind behind such movies as Goodfellas, The Wolf of Wall Street, Taxi Driver, and countless others. There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that this guy knows his way around a story and camera. And yet, every so often, one of these figures goes and says something foolish.

“I tried, you know?” When recently asked by The Guardian as to whether or not he’s seen any of the Marvel movies. “But that’s not cinema.”

I’d like to call B.S. on this one right away. Just because something isn’t up your alley doesn’t make it unworthy of being cinema. But maybe I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe with an extra dose of embellishment that he’d be able to dig himself out of the hole. But no, he only goes on to make things worse.

“Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Ouch. Nothing here rubs me the wrong way more than someone who makes a comment based on very little information. It seems clear to me this man has never given these movies an actual shot. Now, I’m not saying the movies have to be considered good by him, but he should be able to see that there is an underlying layer of human emotion, and in order to see that, you really need look no further than Captain America, who goes from Boy Scout to jaded man on the run.

Of course, every person is allowed their opinion, but you wouldn’t catch me saying that one film isn’t cinema because it’s not my kind of movie. I also wouldn’t watch one movie based on a novel and essentially swear off all movies based on novels because I didn’t like that one. I guess it’s just one thing to say you don’t like a movie and another to say it simply “isn’t cinema.”

Perhaps it just comes with age, but considering the man just took a huge risk in a forward-thinking deal with Netflix, I expected better.

But what do you think of Scorsese’s comments? Let us know down below!
