Marvel Cinematic Universe: Kevin Feige Won’t Rule Out R-Rated Films In The Future

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has pretty much been on fire ever since it was first introduced with Iron Man back in 2008. Sure, there may have been a few duds along the way (Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man 2), but on the whole, the universe has remained strong as time has gone on. However, as Marvel Studios adds more and more films to its already-long list, one has to wonder for how much longer it can go. At one point will these Marvel movies grow stale to most viewers, and are they changing them quickly enough?

With this year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor: Ragnarok, as well as next year’s Black Panther, it certainly seems like they’re ready to shift the style of storytelling into something a bit less bland, but how far are they willing to change things? For instance, are they ever going to be willing to go Deadpool or Logan on us and give us an R-rated flick? After all, Marvel Television has already proven that more mature fare like Daredevil can thrive on the small screen, so who’s to say it can’t on the big screen?

However, given Marvel Studios’ seeming desire to stay relatively family friendly, it doesn’t look like it’s in the cards any time soon. But don’tcount them out of the R-rated game just yet. In a Facebook Live chat with AlloCiné (hat tip to /Film), Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said:

“Not currently planning [R-rated movies], no, but it’s not out of the question. When I started at Marvel 17 years ago, the Blade franchise was doing very well. A lot of people didn’t even know it was based on a Marvel character, because at the time, they sort of hid the fact that it was a Marvel character. So, not out of the question, but not something we’re working on right now.”

Don’t expect to see any of our superheroes dropping F-bombs any time soon, but as the entire world expands, Marvel Studios may very well find themselves looking into more mature characters that would be a better fit for an R-rating. Like, say…Venom? We do know that Sony is hard at work at creating an entire VenomVerse completely separate from the MCU…but could they somehow merge with the MCU down the line?

“For now, there is no plan for Venom in the MCU. It’s a Sony Project.”

Darn. We’re still not sure how we feel about a Venom that has no Spider-Man in it, but we’ll do our best to reserve judgment for when the flick comes out.
