Superheroes have been taking over television for a while. DC has its death grip on the CW (in the best way possible) and their toes in the waters of CBS. Marvel has a variety of programming on both ABC and Netflix. But of course, as these studios start checking off all the big names off the list, they inevitably start reverting to the lesser known ones.
While I wouldn't call the characters Cloak and Dagger obscure -- they're damn near household names, for sure -- I'd say that compared to the bigger Marvel and DC characters, they exist on a lower tier of recognition. But all the same, they have a passionate fan base, and a pretty great origin story to bring to the screen.
According to Variety, it looks like we'll be getting to see the duo in their own TV series on Freeform. For those of you who don't know what the heck Freeform is, it's the channel formerly known as ABC Family. In hopes of growing up with their younger audience, ABC Family morphed itself into Freeform, which is targeted at the "becomer" audience. ABC Family execs described the "becomer" audience as someone who is currently in the stage of "becoming." It's a bit of an abstract description, but in my mind, it hovers around 10-18 in age.
“This is a long time coming," network president Tom Ascheim told Variety. "It really is an evolution of something that started 10 to 12 years ago when this network began to focus on what were then millennials. The network built incredible strength and incredible ratings success with young people, especially women. And then something funny happened on the way of the demographic dance where millennials were no longer synonymous with youth. The oldest ones are turning 40 in a couple of years.”
So what does this mean for CLOAK AND DAGGER? Well, if you've had a chance to check out another of Freeform's shows (which I have), it seems evident that the network seems to be focused on the YA demographic. So the HUNGER GAMES movies, DIVERGENT SERIES, and MAZE RUNNER...all that stuff is pretty much the demo they're shooting for.
According to Variety, this incarnation of MARVEL'S CLOAK AND DAGGER is being described as a superhero love story. The outlet goes on to describe the series as follows.
"The live-action interracial romance follows the duo, two teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love — Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging."
While some fans may roll their eyes at this -- it's definitely en vogue to roll one's eyes at anything labeled YA -- it actually seems to be a smart move. Disney has done a pretty great job at divvying up their Marvel properties. The big characters get big movies, the mainstream spinoffs go on ABC, the darker characters go to Netflix, and the stuff that skews a bit younger will likely go to Freeform. We'll obviously have to wait to see how this turns out, but if history is any indication, this can be another slam dunk from Disney and Marvel.
