Marvel’s Netflix series certainly have a lot going for them. While it’d be easy for the shows to be overly-dark, bland, and violent for the sake of violence, there is a real heart to each and every one of them. The characters in these shows aren’t just characters. They’re not just plot devices. They’re not chess pieces on a board moved around in order to lead to the next big tentpole character. No, they’ve living, breathing entities. This is the case for Daredevil, and this is the case for Jessica Jones.

While Season 2 of Daredevil had a lot of strong points to it, one of the big standouts was Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher.  This anti-hero had been tackled on three different occasions up until that point — all of them unsuccessfully. While he was a favorite among fans, for one reason or another, no one could seem to get him right. Luckily for us, the fourth time’s the charm, and actor Jon Bernthal absolutely knocked it out of the park with the latest interpretation, ultimately locking down a spinoff series for the character.

Now, according to TVLine, the series may have cast its villain. The man in question is Ben Barnes, a British actor who most may recognize as Prince Caspian from 2008’s The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. While they didn’t state with confidence that they knew who Barnes would be portraying the character of Bobby Saint, a character who was already brought to big screen in 2004’s The Punisher and portrayed by James Carpinello.

It’s interesting that Marvel would go in this direction. Bobby Saint isn’t a character from the comic canon, and has only shown up in that one film (unless you count the comic made specifically for the DVD of that film), so I’m intrigued to see what it was about the character they felt was so strong it deserved another interpretation.

As far as the casting goes regarding Barnes, I can take it or leave it. I’ve seen him in a few things, and as far as I could tell, he’s a serviceable actor, but he’s never really stuck out to me. That being said, I’m willing to put this in Marvel’s hands. Whether it be Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, or Bernthal as The Punisher, they’ve done an amazing job casting their shows. I dare not question the talents of their casting director on this one. In true Marvel fashion, I’m sure they’ve cast the actor to the role, rather than take an actor’s filmography into account.

Most exciting, however, is how much momentum this project seems to be getting. Some time ago, we heard word that Marvel was looking for a Micro for the show. If this rumor about Barnes is to be believed, it’s not unreasonable that the show could technically be ready to air next year — the same year that Iron Fist and Defenders are set to show up on Netflix. Given Marvel’s tendency to have two seasons of shows on each year, does this mean we may be getting three seasons in a year for the first time?

One can hope. One can hope.

What do you think of this casting rumor? Does the name Ben Barnes do anything for you? And what about the character Bobby Saint? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below!
