Nebula’s Relationship With Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’s Villain Explained

We were first introduced to Nebula, played by Karen Gillan, in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Like Gamora, she was an adopted daughter of the mad titan Thanos, choosing Ronan’s side over that of her sister’s new team. Though all the Guardians are scoundrels in their own way, Nebula was basically pure evil in the first film, murdering everyone she could before retreating after being beaten by her sister.

Nebula returns this May in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and her role has been expanded past villainous henchwoman. On the first teaser poster she was portrayed as part of the team… “Obviously.” But what could possibly drive her to put her hatred for Gamora and her pals on hold?

ComicBook.com had a chance to chat with Gillan about her character, specifically what Gamora’s relationship will be with the big bad of the film. Let’s just say it’s a slightly more complicated situation. Captured by Ayesha, Nebula wants the freedom she couldn’t achieve by abandoning Ronan and his army on the battlefield of Xandar:

“Well, that’s her main objective throughout the entire film. She obviously takes many paths to sort of get there in any way she can, but she is being held captive. So she’s there against her will, which is just a funny dynamic, because she’s like, ‘Oh for goodness sake.’”

Gillan continued by explaining why Nebula allows herself to be captive:

“She doesn’t really want to be there, but she does because she needs to sort out these things with her sister.”

That’s a nice change of pace. Instead of fighting to help the main villain achieve his goal, this time Nebula is at odds with the baddie. We will see a new side of Nebula, one that is far more sympathetic due to her capture. Based on the trailers, by the end expect her to be a full fledged part of the team, as the enemy of her enemy is her friend. Or sister. Right?

Are you excited tosee this new take on Nebula? Or is she barely on your radar amid the sea of beloved and new characters in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
