Netflix Orders Sci-Fi Drama ‘Raising Dion,’ Michael B. Jordan To Exec Produce

Netflix has announced that they’ve ordered 10 episodes of a brand new sci-fi drama series, Raising Dion. The show will be based on the short film (which you can see above) and comic book series by writer-director Dennis Liu.

The story is an intriguing premise, and it follows a mother, Nicole, as she attempts to raise her son, who has magical abilities. Honestly, the short film above is actually more of a trailer and proof of concept than it is a short, and it does a fantastic job of laying out tons of potential points of conflict.

How do you teach your son about his powers? How do you keep an eye on him? How do you protect him? How do you bathe him? Where do you draw the line? How important is it to find good role models? It’s an intriguing idea, and we’re interested to see how they tackle it in the series.

Showrunner and executive producer Carol Barbee has joined the series, penning the first episode of the show, which is set to be directed by Liu himself. Also of interest is that actor Michael B. Jordan is acting as an executive producer through his production company. He will also be appearing as Dion’s dead father.

Regarding this deal, Liu stated:

“I started this project many years ago because I wanted to see more diverse representation on film and television and I’m excited to partner with Netflix, who I know shares that commitment. More than ever, we need more stories told from different points of view and my hope with Raising Dion is to create a cinematic experience for all families that will lift your spirits and make you laugh and cry.”

Cindy Holland, Netflix’s VP of original content, said:

“We haven’t seen this type of superhero story before — an origin myth full of imagination, wonder and adventure, all grounded in the experiences of a modern single mother. Michael B. Jordan is an exciting and dynamic talent, and I’m excited to see him, Macro, Carol and the team translate Dennis’ unique vision to television.”
