Netflix Signs Stranger Things’ Shawn Levy To A Multi-Project Deal

Are you a fan of Stranger Things? Do you enjoy movies like Night at the Museum or Real Steel (but maybe not Date Night or The Pink Panther reboot)? Well good news, according to The Wrap, Netflix has just signed mega-successful producer/director Shawn Levy (and his production company) to a multi-year deal on the streaming service.

As we noted recently, Stranger Things 3 is happening, and Levy is a big reason for that show’s success. Levy’s Hollywood career spans 20 years, including more than 40 directing credits. Levy grew up during the 80s, so he’s clearly the kind of guy that fits pretty much everything Netflix does, given their embrace of nostalgia — particularly the 1980s!

So, what is Levy going to create for Netflix? The Wrap reports that the deal entails one or more original series. That’s all we know thus far, and we’ll be following this annoucement closely. Levy is rather pleased about the gig, we know because he said this:

“I don’t know any other company that would have taken a chance on a show about kids and inter-dimensional monsters, created by young unknown twin brothers and produced by a movie director’s production company. Netflix did, and they bet big, and it’s been truly thrilling to take this wild ride with such exceptional partners.”

This is an important announcement for Netflix, who’s recently made headlines with other high-profile signings, like the Coen Brothers and Stephen Soderbergh, who are (so far) only are dipping their toes into streaming content. Levy joins David Fincher (House of Cards, Mindhunter) as the service’s second big-name producer/writer/director to forge a multi-project relationship. Going forward, hopefully Netflix will continue to grow their stable of creators, ensuring quality content over the long-term.

Given Levy’s track record to-date — in both TV and film — this is an important and positive moment for Netflix, which should be embraced by their subscribers.
