John Wick was one of those films that didn’t exactly scream for a sequel. It told a great, intimate little self-contained story. The film was a pleasant surprise and became quite a sleeper hit when it came out in 2014. Due to the nature of its story, though, there was no real sense that it should become a series because the titular character is a man that has seemingly retired.

With that in mind, John Wick: Chapter 2 was going to have to convince us that there was a compelling reason for Wick (Keanu Reeves) to go back for more mayhem in the very world he wanted so badly to leave behind. 

This brand spanking new trailer for John Wick: Chapter 2 attempts to do just that:

The new trailer, as second trailers often do, gives us a closer look at the plot of the film and at the sprawling cast of characters that Wick will be encountering this time around. This includes showing off how the film will be a bit of a The Matrix reunion, with Laurence Fishburne’s character demanding that Wick be given a gun. The two did appear in the films that revolutionized action movie-making with “bullet time,” after all.

John Wick: Chapter 2 comes out on February 10.
