If Denis Villeneuve isn’t the hottest director in Hollywood, who is? Granted, Taika Waititi and Patty Jenkins are getting a lot of attention right now, but over the last five years Villeneuve has been ascending at an amazing rate. Prisoners, Sicario, Arrival, and now Blade Runner 2049 have firmly established him as an innovative and versatile filmmaker with a knack for attention to detail.
Granted, Blade Runner 2049 did not perform at the box office, but this was a skillfully made film with solid performances and incredibly moody atmosphere. So, what’s up next for Villeneuve?
PlayList reports that Villeneuve working on his first major script for the long-awaited re-adaptation of Frank Herbert’s sci-fi classic, Dune. Clearly, Villeneuve does not fear tackling beloved franchises, but man is he taking a bite out of an awfully big sandwich here.
Recently, however, actor Daniel Craig was cited for naming Villeneuve as his first choice to direct the next James Bond film. Notably, Bond’s producers also had Villeneuve on their short list.
However, Villeneuve indicated that his current priority is Dune, but he wouldn’t be averse to working on a future 007 flick:
“I don’t now about that, but listen, Daniel Craig is a very inspiring actor and I had some contact and the thing is that I’m busy right now doing ‘Dune.’ But, I will say to have the privilege to work with him it would be a dream. I would love to work with Daniel and a Bond movie for me would be a treat. It’s a matter of timing, I guess.”
Of course, the one downside here is that Craig is likely not sticking around Bond for much longer. Nonetheless, given the right circumstances, he may still be willing to make the jump. Villeneuve has a lot more to say, which is captured in an audio transcript on PlayList‘s web site.
