We had a lot of questions when it was announced that they’d be making a brand new Power Rangers film. How would they be able to adapt such a campy tone for the big screen was the biggest one? They had tried in the past, and while as a kid I may have thought Ivan Ooze was the coolest thing ever, the reality is that the film wasn’t really so hot. Would they be able to adapt the property, keep its tone, and manage to hook a mainstream audience? That remains to be seen.

However, if all the marketing we have seen up until this point are any indication, then they may very well have done it. The trailers are solid mix of grounded, fun YA fare, and over-the-top colors and action — the perfect mixture for Power Rangers lovers. If you weren’t yet convinced of this, Lionsgate has now released its first clip from the film, and it’s pretty long.

Clocking in at around two minutes, the clip shows the Rangers discovering the alien ship that will be the command center. While doing so, they run into a face fans may find familiar.

Check it out below!

Again, I can’t say this enough: the movie seems to be striking a great balance between fun and serious. Sure, the stakes are real, but at the end of the day, we are dealing with a bunch of teen misfits, and the film seems like it’s making sure we won’t forget that. Let’s just hope the teen antics don’t get too much in the way of all the world-rescuing they have to do.

The synopsis for Power Rangers is below:

“SABAN’S POWER RANGERS follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.”
