Next year, we’ll be getting the long-awaited Power Rangers film. It’s been quit a while since this franchise has been in its heyday, but that’s not to say that it hasn’t been around — in fact, since the ‘90s, it’s pretty much been around non-stop, though one’s familiarity with the franchise may be indirectly proportional to their age. In other words, you probably grew out of it. But that’s not to say you can’t indulge in a little bit of nostalgia. We live in an era of nostalgia. From Star Wars to Star Trek to Transformers and Creed, our culture is obsessed with re-capturing those nuggets of an older age.

Of course, it remains to be seen as to whether or not this latest iteration of Power Rangers is any good, but the shots and teaser we have seen thus far have all been quite promising. Now, Lionsgate has released a new poster showing off the Rangers’ Zords. Check it out below (via Comicbook.com)

As much of an optimist about this film, there’s nothing in this poster that gets me excited. The Zords are kind of a make-or-break aspect of the show, and if they can’t be realized on the big screen in a believable way (especially after the high bar the likes of Transformers set for giant robots), then some viewers won’t be able to take it seriously. To me, the poster looks like it had a few poorly-rendered CG figures pasted into the shot. We’re not too impressed, and we hope that this isn’t an indication of what we can expect in the finished film.

If you want to go out on more of a higher note, however, you can check out the latest shot of Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa, the arch nemesis of Zordon and the Power Rangers. The shot was shared via the official Power Rangers Twitter feed with a caption that would make Rita Repulsa herself proud (in fact the entirety of the account seems to have been taken over by Rita).

Thought you saw the last of me?!? Ignoramus, you thought wrong. I have glorious catastrophic plans for the holiday season. #RepulsaTakesOver

While there is nothing particularly revelational about this photo, Banks is looking as deliciously campy as usual in her outfit. It’s a direction that could potentially turn off some audience members, but let’s hope the film is able to make it work.

If nothing else, you can perhaps take solace in one of the more pervasive theories surrounding Rita, which implies that she is, in fact a former Power Ranger herself.

Below is the official synopsis for Power Rangers:

“Saban’s Power Rangers follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.”
