Predator 2 Almost Featured This Awesome Setting And Time Period

The first Predator film in 1987 starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Carl Weathers, taking place in the jungle; the perfect locale for the alien creature to hunt man. For the 1990 sequel starring Danny Glover and Garey Busey, the hunt was taken into the urban jungle of Los Angeles. Apparently, this was not always the plan, and this alternative take on Predator 2 sounds pretty damn awesome.

At a screening celebrating the 30th anniversary of Predator, writer Jim Thomas told the crowd that they considered this setting for Predator 2, after it was clear Schwarzenegger was not going to return:

“We also had an idea about doing a World War 2 version in the Battle of the Bulge, in the middle of the winter. A German foot platoon and an American platoon separated, and had a stalemate fighting each other off when the Predator shows up. They have to join together to defeat it. We thought the snow Predator effect would be quite different.”

This would have certainly been a change of pace for the franchise, which has only progressed further ahead in time, with next year’s The Predator from Shane Black being set again in modern times. If the Predator franchise has any life left in it after next year’s entry, perhaps jumping backwards in time to humans even less equipped to deal with the beast may be the right move.

Does this alternate version of Predator 2 sound like something you wish we’d gotten, or are you happy with how the film turned out? I know it’s been a few years…
