As soon as it was revealed that Mads Mikkelsen would be lending his talents to ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY it seemed like a foregone conclusion that he’d be playing a villain. The actor has done so quite often in his film work, and the recent HANNIBAL TV series didn’t do much to go against that bit of typecasting. Regardless, he was a great talent to have on board. Admittedly, I was pretty shocked when it was revealed that he would be playing the father to Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, who is the lead in the story.
It seemed like my assumption was wrong, but I held out. Perhaps the man was estranged from his daughter, and he would serve as a bit of a baddie. That doesn’t seem to be the case now.
During the STAR WARS Celebration livestream, we caught a look at the first image of Mads Mikkelsen’s Galen Erso.
Check him out below.
I think I’ll just have to bite the bullet and accept the fact that Mikkelsen isn’t playing yet another demented soul. Yes, the man may have a horrible past and a bone to pick with authority, but based on the photo, he doesn’t look to the mustache-twirling villain I had been expecting (read: hoping for) in this film. But don’t think I’m let down by this reveal. The man brings a lot to every role he takes, and I doubt his role as Galen Erso will be any exception.
"Following the foundation of the Galactic Empire, a wayward band of Rebel fighters comes together to carry out a desperate mission: to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor's rule."
ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
