In today’s age of information, it’s pretty darn difficult for secrets to be kept in Hollywood. Unless you’re Disney or J.J. Abrams (or worse, both), then good luck keeping some of those fun Easter eggs in your films secret for very long. Somewhere down the line, someone is going to spoil it for you in a big way (remember Tom Cruise’s surprise role in Tropic Thunder that was spoiled for everyone?). Well, it looks like we may be facing a similar situation in Alien: Covenant (though I suppose the key difference here is that Alien: Covenant isn't a comedy).
Needless to say, if you’re someone who doesn’t like to be spoiled by surprise cast members, now is the time to look away. However, if you’re like me, and don’t want to be distracted in the theater when a random star shows up, then keep on reading, but consider yourself warned.
So the folks over at AvPGalaxy have been a busy bunch.
According to the outlet, Danny McBride won’t be the only Judd Apatow regular heading to Alien: Covenant, as we can expect to see James Franco on the titular ship as well. In fact, Franco won’t only be a part of the crew, but he’s set to be the captain of the Covenant, as well as husband to Katherine Waterston’s lead character Daniels. The name of Franco’s character is supposedly named Branson, and he’s set to only really appear in the first ten minutes of the film “with later small appearances,” which is interesting. I would have thought Franco would have taken on more of a cameo appearance before getting killed off, but if he’s to have appearances later in the flick, perhaps it will be a role that’ll increase in importance in future films.
Alien: Covenant won’t be the only place we’ll be seeing Franco’s character. He will also be playing Branson in the viral footage that was shot for the film, probably not unlike how Guy Pearce’s character gave an extensive fake Ted Talk prior to the release of Prometheus a few years back.
While it is a bit difficult to take Franco seriously in some of these roles initially, it can’t be forgotten that Franco managed to make his performance work in such films as 127 Hours and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, so I’ll try not to let my cynical side take over because of this rumor.
It’s also worth mentioning that this strictly falls in the “rumor” category, so don’t take this as the gospel just yet.
