There's been a lot of mystery surrounding Ridley Scott's latest film in the ALIEN/PROMETHEUS franchise, ALIEN: COVENANT. While major details are still unknown, The Playlist has recently revealed quite the juicy detail regarding actress Katherine Waterston's role in the film.
If you'd like to go into ALIEN: COVENANT completely fresh, I suggest you not read ahead.
The Playlist posted the following.
"Sources close to film and actress tell us the Waterston will be playing Ellen Ripley’s mother in ALIEN: COVENANT which is an amazing twist and true to Ridley Scott’s promise that the post-PROMETHEUS prequels will eventually lead right up to the first ALIEN movie. It should be noted however that Waterston isn’t the lead of the movie, and it’s an ensemble piece like PROMETHEUS."
It's also worth nothing that The Playlist has since taken down the quote, and as such, there's a good chance that it's an accurate rumor.
If true, this is one hell of a twist, and will do well to service fans. Despite director Ridley Scott's insistence that PROMETHEUS wouldn't connect directly to ALIEN, one of the number one complaints from fans and journalists alike seemed to be the fact that it didn't connect directly to ALIEN. The fact that Scott is finally bridging those gaps between prequel and sequel will undoubtedly be a rewarding experience for hardcore fans.
A part of me is torn by this revelation. While it is cool that we're finally starting to see some real connections, it is a bit irksome that Ripley's mother apparently also had a serious connection to the aliens in question. I'm all for telling a continuous story, but having characters related to one another in vast universes has always rang false to me (it's one of the main reasons I hope Rey isn't a Skywalker). That being said, I have confidence in Scott's storytelling ability, and I was one of the few folks who genuinely enjoyed PROMETHEUS.
