Not only has Marvel helped to pioneer the idea of shared universes in the movie-sphere, but they’ve also managed to absolutely nail all of their entries so far on Netflix, establishing a smaller, and more grounded universe at the street-level. Thus far, they’ve had two seasons of DAREDEVIL and one season of JESSICA JONES, and both series so far have been revered by fans as exemplary pieces of television. Up next on their Netflix plate, they have LUKE CAGE. So far, we’ve had a teaser for that series, and if his role in JESSICA JONES is any indication, that series should be no less riveting than the other two.
The series following LUKE CAGE will be IRON FIST, which will likely shift the Netflix Marvel universe in a new direction, but perhaps one of the biggest questions fans have had is when Marvel would be shooting their big crossover series, THE DEFENDERS. Like THE AVENGERS before it, THE DEFENDERS will be a culmination of the standalone character series we’ve seen so far, and will have Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist at the forefront of some great threat.
So when will this bad boy start filming? Well, we’ve known for a while that it would be at the tail end of this year, but thanks to one of our sources, we now know that Marvel is looking at this fall — more specifically a late August-October window — to bring together all four street-level superheroes. Of course, while Marvel is looking at THE DEFENDERS as a culmination, that by no means means the stories will stop there. Following that series, they’re looking to produce a second season of JESSICA JONES, and a third season of DAREDEVIL.
As far as when all these series/seasons will air, we can’t say quite yet. Given their pattern of releasing two a year, it would make logical sense for us to see IRON FIST early next year and THE DEFENDERS late next year, but we’ll have to wait and see.
DAREDEVIL season 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Netflix along with the first season of JESSICA JONES.
LUKE CAGE is set to hit the streaming service on September 30, 2016.
