It would appear that Andy Serkis wants the record for "Craziest-Looking Residual Checks." And he's well on his way.
In a chat with Variety, Serkis revealed that not only is his motion-capture company The Imaginarium working closely with Mark Ruffalo to create the best Hulk yet but that he is also set to appear in the film. He wouldn't say if it was in the flesh, or via another of his vintage mo-cap performances, though.
"The Imaginarium is the performance capture consultant, and I’m playing a role," he tells Variety. Of course, this being Marvel, there's little else he can reveal but he did add, "I’m not at liberty to mention. But it’s all the same to me. I’ve never drawn a distinction when playing a role, whether it be live action or performance capture. Acting is acting. It’s just basically what you wear to the set that’s different."
And what did he have to say about Ruffalo's work so far in The Avengers: Age of Ultron? He seems to think Ruffalo has taken further ownership of the role this time. He says, "Performance capture was used on the previous 'Hulk,' but not to the same extent Mark is using it now. There are tools and ways of working with an actor that makes them feel that they own the character. And a character the size of the Hulk needs ownership, which Mark has now."
So what do you think of more Serkis? What's next? What other massive Hollywood franchises can we get him into? Screw it. Let's make him the next cinematic Penguin in DC's Batman universe.
