Shane Black’s Predator Movie Seeks Crazy Person, Finds Perfect Guy

You’re a Predator fan, right? Let’s assume you are, it makes writing this article so much easier.

Perhaps you recall the events of Predator 2 (1990), when Hollywood’s resident crazy person, Gary Busey, went after the violent space alien with the freeze gun from Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin… it didn’t end so well for Busey (see video below).

Enter Shane Black (Iron Man 3, The Nice Guys), who wrote the original Lethal Weapon (1987), which cast Busey in yet another crazy-guy role — this also ended poorly for his character. Now Black is writing and directing the re-reboot The Predator, and it turns out there’s a new role for a crazy person, but sadly Busey’s character is still dead. Now what?

Fortunately, Busey has a son named Jake, who also has a habit of playing characters that are more-or-less unhinged. Perfect. The younger Busey has been cast in The Predator as… wait for it… the son of the character his father played in Predator 2. Wait, what? Actually, if you think about it for a second, this is kind of genius!

Speaking with PopCulture, the younger Busey had this to say:

“[Black] felt that it would be a nice tie-in, and something to add some depth and connectivity between the two films, sort of tying the franchise together in a tighter knot having the characters more closely bound.”

So, to clarify, The Predator is a direct sequel to Predator 2, but also kind of a follow-up or prequel to Predators (2010), which was set off-world within an ambiguous timeline. Sure, that clears up everything.

Busey continues:

“This one definitely falls in line with the original franchise in that it does focus on the technology that the Predators have. It focuses on what the goal of the Predators is, and what their modus operandi, and why they come to the planet, and that type of thing. It’s definitely in line with the original franchise.”

That’s pretty cool, right? In Black’s iteration we’re going to learn more about the Predator’s tech, techniques, and culture… at this point, I kind of need to know why they continue doing what they’ve been doing. The cast Black has assembled for this film is kind of remarkable (Olivia Munn, Thomas Jane, Edward James Olmos, Keegan-Michael Key, Boyd Holbrook, Sterling K. Brown), altough we can assume that most of them will die badly… we should start a pool! The Predator is shaping-up to be something special.
