Shazam: John Cena & Joshua Sasse Are Rumored Frontrunners To Play Shazam!

For a film that took practically forever to get started, news is sure starting to pile up pretty darn quickly. Shazam is an upcoming DC film that looks to be the most lighthearted fare in the DC Extended Universe yet. Ironically enough, this one is being helmed by Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation horror mastermind David F. Sandberg. Though in spite of his horror background, he assures us that this is very much a fun tale of wish fulfillment, as it should be.

But who will be set to star in this film? This is the big question, as this movie will have not one, but two leading males. The first one will come in the form of Billy Batson, the young kid who says the magic word “Shazam!” and transforms into the big, buff Shazam (previously known as Captain Marvel). For Billy, the studio is rumored to be doing a big casting call in search of an unknown, and for Shazam himself, we’re now getting a new rumor, courtesy of ThatHashtagShow.

According to the outlet, there are two frontrunners. Frontrunner number one is British actor Joshua Sasse, who is bets known for his runs on the musical comedy from ABC, Galavant (where he played Galavant), and the romantic comedy CW series No Tomorrow (where he played Xavier). He’s probably the lesser known of the two frontrunners, and while he is a solid actor, he is admittedly not the closest physically to the comic book superhero.

The other frontrunner is the better-known John Cena, and while he may be best known as a professional wrestler, he has recently landed a big gig on the Bumblebee spinoff movie. Needless to say, Cena is well on his way to joining the ranks of Dwayne Johnson as a wrestler-gone-Hollywood-superstar. Physically, Cena is definitely a better fit for Shazam, though we have to wonder if he’d be too recognizable to disappear completely into the role. That being said, we would love to see him and Dwayne Johnson (who plays Black Adam) clash on the big screen at some point down the line.

What do you think of these two actors? Who would be a better fit for Shazam, and are either of them up to the task in your eyes? Let us know down below!
