Each and every Star Wars movie has its own struggles and obstacles to overcome. Star Wars: The Force Awakens had the immense pressure of picking up the story from the original trilogy decades later, and setting the bar high so that fans knew that Star Wars didn’t suck anymore. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was tasked with creating the very first standalone film in the franchise, and its failure could have brought into question whether or not the Star Wars films could exist outside of the saga films. Star Wars: The Last Jedi has the unenviable job of following up the now-beloved Force Awakens, and faces endless comparisons to The Empire Strikes Back, the undeniable favorite among most Star Wars fans.
The upcoming Han Solo spinoff may have the toughest job of all. It needs to make us buy someone else other than Harrison Ford as the shifty smuggler. As such, fans have been hungry for any scrap of information they can get. As insecure fanboys, we need any assurance we can get that this film won’t completely crash and burn.
Well, the eagle-eyed folks over at Star Wars News Net have found a batch of concept art from the depths of Ebay, and they supposedly show some work for next year's Han Solo film. From drawings of Han Solo to drawings and CG renderings of ships, it’s a veritable wet dream for Star Wars geeks.
I found it pretty interesting that they needed to draw a picture of Alden Ehrenreich’s Han Solo. I mean, we kind of already know what he looks like, so what’s the point in drawing him, right? Obviously, the image itself is helpful in establishing the style and look of the character, as well as his clothing, which should be in line with what he wears in the first film, but I found it oddly simplistic and plain.
The real gold in these images comes in those ship drawings. I’m no ship design nut, but I certainly do love the way a lot of these 2D drawings look. Honestly, just the way they were colored in and shaded felt very reminiscent of some great mech anime and manga, and gave me a real cyberpunk feel. As this is Star Wars, we know for a fact they won’t be heading in that direction, but it’s still pretty cool to see. Some other shots saw some live-action sets, as well as CG renderings.
Sadly, it’s impossible to see how this all fits into the film as a whole, but if nothing else, we know these ships are looking pretty badass.
