The folks over at Variety, and at The Wrap, have done some digging into Steven Spielberg's next film, Ready Player One, and have discovered who the legendary filmmaker is eyeing for parts in the picture. According to those outlets, Spielberg has set his sights on Elle Fanning, Olivia Cooke, and Lola Kirke for the female lead, and Nick Robinson is a rumored contender for the male lead.
While The Wrap unearthed the female candidates, Variety chimed in with the lone male name that's floating around at the moment. Spielberg directed Fanning's older sister, Dakota, in War of The Worlds, and she appeared in Super 8, which was J.J. Abrams's love letter to Spielberg. Cooke currently appears in A&E's Bates Motel. Lola Kirke was in 2014's acclaimed Gone Girl. Similar to Fanning, Robinson also appeared in a Spielberg love fest (this summer's Jurassic World).
Ready Player One is a sci-fi adventure, which will find characters on a quest using avatars in a virtual world called Oasis. It's based on the novel by Ernest Cline, and centers on Wade Watts- the character that would presumably be played by Robinson- as he hunts for a prize in the virtual world that he always goes to when he wants to escape his harsh reality.
Word has it that Spielberg's casting department is trying to narrow down the actors quickly so that the director can get right to work on the film once he's done working on Bridge of Spies and The BFG.
